Scuba Computer Basics

LeisurePro Tip: A dive computer helps you gauge air pressure, depth and time of dive. Some also measure water temperature, ascent rate and even tell you when it is safe to fly in an airplane (you should wait at least 24-hours from your last dive). From the basic to the extravagant, using a safety computer is the best way to avoid decompression sickness.

There are many types of dive computers from which to choose, depending on your preference. Here are two popular options:

• Console scuba computer: This is a hand-held computer that displays all of the information on a dashboard and is attached with a hose. It is easy to read, but is not ideal for underwater photographers as it is not hands-free.
• Wrist computer: This computer looks like a watch and is worn on the wrist. Some people even wear them out of the water; using their dive computer as a wrist watch. These computers do not generally incorporate an air pressure gauge, unless they are wireless or air-integrated. This type of scuba dive computer is not a preferable choice if you have difficulty reading small numbers.
