What happens in a scuba diving certification class?

Scuba Dive Certification Basics

LeisurePro Tip: If you're a strong swimmer, love natural beauty and have an insatiable curiosity, then scuba diving may be the perfect sport for you. To learn how to scuba dive, you will need to take lessons from a certified instructor. Here's what you can expect:

If you do not have a lot of free time, accelerated classes can teach you the basics. But if you wish to become fully certified, you must take an open water diving course, which can last up to three days.

On the first day of class, you will have to pass a written test and a swimming test. If you pass your swim test, you will be able to learn the ins and outs of your scuba gear and practice breathing under water. The second day will most likely teach you safety lessons, such as rescuing a distressed diver. You will probably train in a body of water other than a pool to get a feel for what you can expect when open water diving. On the third day, you will do more diving, learn more safety skills and will have to perform a final test.

You can generally rent gear from the dive shop where you're taking courses, but it might be wise to train with your own gear, so you can get used to it. If you don't want to spend a lot of money on new gear, you can always get discount scuba gear online.
